Abu Dhabi expats to pay 50% healthcare premiums

Expats in Abu Dhabi might experience some changes in their healthcare coverage. Although the changes won’t affect everybody, those who are covered by the Abu Dhabi Basic Plan from Daman will face added insurance costs.

Expats over the age of 40 will be expected to pay up to 50% of their policy’s premium. Expat workers on this plan will also have to pay 50% of the premium for their spouses and up to three children – with any other family members not receiving coverage.

It is hoped that by implementing these changes, the country can improve their healthcare sector. The policy changes will allow investors to build new health services – which will have major effects on the medical tourism industry. It is expected that the improvements will attract more in-bound patients to the country, as well as less people leaving to receive medical care elsewhere.

Public hospitals will not be affected by this change.
