Malaysia has confirmed its first case of the Zika virus, following Singapore’s announcement of its first locally contracted case of the disease in the same week. The 58-year-old woman, who had been visiting her daughter in Singapore, experienced a rash and fever after returning from the country.
After being tested positive for the virus, the country’s Health Minister reported that control measures around the woman’s home would be taken to control the spread of the virus. These procedures will target aedes mosquitoes in the area, as well as fogging and larvicidal spraying in neighbouring homes.
Following this report, the first local infection in Malaysia has been confirmed as a 61-year-old man.
The country expects more cases to follow.
